EAGG Meets Wendy Chan

Writer: Eileen Wada WillettEileen Wada Willett

Born in Hong Kong and growing up in Australia, Wendy moved to the UK in 2010 and immediately fell in love with London. By day, she works as a project manager in a bank, while nurturing her deep passion for travel, having explored more than 40 countries (she's stopped counting).

A dedicated flamenco dancer and language enthusiast, Wendy has in recent years been increasingly drawn to holistic and energy healing. She has since trained extensively in Ayurveda, Feng Shui, and Reiki. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to co-found a candle company with a friend, and during the pandemic, she discovered a talent for crafting natural skincare products using Ayurvedic principles. This DIY approach extends to her daily life, where she enjoys making everything from lip balms to dishwashing tablets, always prioritizing natural ingredients.

• With Hong Kong as your hometown, and childhood in Australia, you are now a committed Londoner in love with London. What are your thoughts on your living a ‘bi-cultural’ or ‘multi-cultural’ life?

It really is a double edged sword, as on one hand, you gain so much by learning a new language, making new friends, and living in a new country. However on the other hand, I am aware that there is a dilution of my Chinese culture, and that I have forgotten a lot of traditions and customs that will probably not be passed on to the next generation.

Going forward, I think that “Where you are from?” is going to be a harder question for most people to answer, as the world becomes more connected and people can work from anywhere in the world.

• You are a globetrotting wanderer who has visited more than forty countries, what have you learned from your travels?

A couple of things come to mind.

How fortunate we are to live in a developed country where you can get drinking water from the tap and order pretty much anything on the internet and it will come the next day.

Also just how fortunate I am to be a woman that is educated and independent and can support myself financially

That we as humans are able to understand other animals, as if we all speak the same universal language (this is what I wrote down after safari experience in Africa).

And that sadly, as a modern western society, we have in some ways lost connection to our land, our ancestors and our spirituality.

• You have a deep interest in holistic and energy healing. Tell us more about why you have been drawn to Ayurveda, Feng Shui and Reiki and how these practices have added to your life?

This is not a quick question to answer! Initially, I started studying Ayurveda because I was curious to understand why Chinese people are always talking about “heating” and “cooling” foods. I got that answer and much more by studying Ayurveda. It had profoundly changed my life and my understanding of the world. I feel empowered to use food as my medicine to correct any health issues I have.

During my studies, I also learned about energies, for example, you are not able to physically see or touch emotions, but they can be part of a root cause of a disease. As I began to help my own clients with Ayurveda, I realised just how profound one’s energy has on one’s physical wellbeing.

Feng Shui and Reiki are very much part of this journey into the world of “energy medicine” that I am currently on.

• Amongst the many strands in your life, you also your own beauty products. How did this start and where would you like it to go?

I have always been a bit of a DIY person an I’m a big proponent of using only natural ingredients. I had experimented with making soaps and candles and launched a a candle company which I started with a friend a few years ago. However, it really started during Covid where some of the Ayurvedic creams was out of stock and we had to improvise by making balms out of Ayurvedic herbal oils for our clients with skin problems. I realised how easy and simple it was to make a balm, which then started my journey into first making my own lip balms, then cleansing balms and other products. As a complete aside, I recently started making my own dishwashing tablets too!

I would love to start my own beauty brand one day to incorporates Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and ingredients into skin care.

What drew you to joining the East Asian Girl Gang, and what have you gained from the group?

I was invited to the East Asian Girl Gang by my Ayurvedic classmate Christine. It is so lovely to be in a community of women who share the same culture. I have attended a couple of events and they have all been really fun (mahjong comes to mind!) and I have met some incredible Asian women.

• What are your top three tips on healing that we can all practice?

Drink a glass of warm/hot water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach

Do not suppress your emotions

Do the thing that makes you happy
