What happens when you join hands with others, throw open doors and coalesce over shared food, drink and heritage? Last Wednesday, East Asian Girl Gang joined hands with the Asian Leadership Collective and Dominique's Kitchen on the 5th floor of the Allbright Mayfair Club alongside our sponsor the Diversity Standards Collective and supporters HumaniTea, Beauty and Seoul and Cucumber Clothing. That's a powerhouse powder keg already! Add in 25 strong, intellectually curious women, many, but not all of ESEA heritage, one brave man, some delicious tastes of Thai-inspired drinks, a mouthful of sweet Miso Chocolate Fridge Cake, a simplified pass at the Michigan Fish Test, and conversations and sharing over memories of food, family and heritage. It was a blast! Connections were forged and deepened, ideas and experiences were exchanged, and goody bags opened with pleasure.

This evening event made me realise just how much of a gap there is for occasions such as these that create a welcoming and safe environment to meet and share. East Asian Girl Gang was founded on the belief that meaningful friendships and a community could be built on the basis of something as elemental as a shared heritage. Last week's event proved us right, so consider this the start of a series of events to come.
